My Machine

Sew Mama Sew! is up to their tricks again, and this month is sewing machine month!  I haven’t talked about my machine that much, so I decided to play along with their meme!

What brand and model do you have?
Husqvarna Viking Scandanavia 100

How long have you had it?
Christmas 2006

How much does that machine cost (approximately)?
$400 bought 2.5 years ago – you can maybe find it cheaper now??

What types of things do you sew (i.e. quilting, clothing, handbags, home dec projects, etc.)?
See my categories to the right – mostly quilting and bags

How much do you sew? How much wear and tear does the machine get?
If it’s a good week, I burn away almost 10 hours on the machine.  That’s small change for a lot people, I know…but I do have a full-time job and driving in LA traffic to contend with and compete for my time!

Do you like/love/hate your machine? Are you ambivalent? Passionate? Does she have a name?
It’s a workhorse…I certainly abuse it, and haven’t had too many issues yet!  I love the top drop-in bobbin, so I can see when I’m going to run out (if I remember to look).  The things I would look for in an upgraded machine would be the needle down feature, and more stitches – I think I only have ~50 currently.  No name – I’m not at all creative enough to do that.

What features does your machine have that work well for you?
It’s very easy to use because it’s not computerized – just turn a knob & go!  Oh, and it’s self-oiling, so I never have to worry about that sort of maintenance. :)

Is there anything that drives you nuts about your machine?
Not that I can think of!

Do you have a great story to share about your machine (i.e., Found it under the Christmas tree? Dropped it on the kitchen floor? Sewed your fingernail to your zipper?, Got it from your Great Grandma?, etc.!)? We want to hear it!
I did not dream that the machine was my Christmas present from my hubby!  The box it came in very much resembles a carton that computer paper comes in, so I was convinced Steve had somehow bottom-weighted this box and there was something small inside.  It was driving me crazy, I’m usually very good at figuring out my presents based on shape and weight!

Would you recommend the machine to others? Why?
Sure – I think it’s a great entry-level machine for a reasonable price.  I haven’t really had any problems, other than some weird needle-breakage issues when I was using a decently high threadcount sheet for backing.

What factors do you think are important to consider when looking for a new machine?
First, what you’re going to use the machine for, then how other things compliment that usage – stitches, accessories, set-up required, etc.

Do you have a dream machine?
Sticking to the Husqvarna family, the Designer SE.  Although, the Janome 6600P Dana is giving away as part of her quiltalong looks pretty darn awesome too!
